Unit 16 Little Miss Poppy Treaser led the Pledge of Allegiance, distributed Memorial Poppies to the attendees, and presented Post 16 Commander Terry with a balloon bouquet and card on behalf of the junior members at the ceremony.

Standing in front of the Liberty Bell, left to right Paige Duracher and Megan Bartley.  Unit 16 junior members Paige and Megan both served as Floor Captains.  They were responsible for everyone getting up and going to bed on time.  They made sure everyone knew where they needed to go for the next activity, and kept everyone informed as to the schedule and what was happening next.

National awards presented during American Legion Auxiliary mid-winter conference

The Robert H. Burns, American Legion Family Post 16 attended the Department of Louisiana Mid-Winter Conference held in Alexandria Jan. 18-20.

The auxiliary's opening session began with the processional of past department presidents, a parade of flags and the department officers for 2007-08. Past Department President Winnie Broussard presented Department President Maggie Watts the gavel.

Meetings were attended, and Noella Champagne, Alternate National Executive Committeewoman, held a presentation of the National Awards for the year 2006-07 received by the Department of Louisiana during the National Convention held this past summer in Reno, Nev. Unit 16 was presented the following National Awards: "Best Poppy Poster in the Southern Division Class V," Blake Kenworthey, student from Fontainebleau High School and "National President's Scholarship in the Southern Division," Jane Duracher, an auxiliary member and 2007 graduate of Covington High School.

Marie Duracher, as Department of Louisiana's Public Relations Chairman, was awarded a National citation for "New Department Web Site," and for the second year in a row received national's "Elizabeth Lainson Award" for Best Press Book by a department with 10,001-25,000 members.

Local senior members attending were Lee Bourgeois, Mary Beth Buras, Tammy Casadaban, Jane Duracher, Marie Duracher, Martha Dutsch, Millie Fitzmorris, Marilyn Gorgas, Carol Johansen, Cindy Kellum, Betty McArthur, Evie McNeese,Unit 16's President and Sandra Sharp.

Local junior members attending were Stephanie Casadaban and Treaser McArthur, Unit 16's Little Miss Poppy. Junior members Stephanie and Treaser presented Department of Louisiana Honorary Junior President/Springfield Unit 258's Miss Poppy Brittany Watts with 1,800 Veterans' Valentines colored by Abita Springs Elementary School, Lake Castle Private School and St. Peter School students.

 

Post 16's members attending the Department of Louisiana American Legion Mid-Winter Conference were Post 16 Commander Terry Sharp and members James Fitzmorris, Emil Johansen, and Roy Kellum.

Squadron 16's members attending the Detachment of Louisiana Sons of the American Legion Mid-Winter Conference were Squadron Commander Danny McArthur and member Dylon McArthur
